The Outdoor Oasis

Great design doesn’t just dwell inside closed doors. Any outdoor space has amazing potential to be a room full of style and great design. Whether you have a large wrap around patio or a small terrace no space should be dull and boring. Outdoor spaces are used for dining and entertaining and should always be comfortable and fun and reflect your personality. This is a great area to be bold and not be afraid to use bright colours and lots of textures. We are going to share some outdoor spaces that inspired us and show you how to get the look yourself. Whether you opt to amp up your space with a fresh collection of accessories and decor or completely pump up your summer entertaining with a whole new outdoor makeover.

Use a colour for base cushions instead of a white to completely transform the look of common outdoor furniture. Cool tones still have a neutral feel that can be amped up with an accent colour. Get bored of the throw cushions? Try another colour and transform the room yet again!

I absolutely LOVE the look of this outdoor space. The use of bright colours with lots of pattern in the throw cushions and bold decor choices like the stool and lantern create the feel of a traveled space. The fire pit is perfect for lounging around and creates a wonderful atmosphere that is visually appealing (it's totally worth the little bit of extra heat)

Like to play it safe? Neutral colours don’t have to be boring. Making use of calmer colours can be very soothing and relaxing. Coloured garden pots are a great way to add decor to an outdoor space that is also practical.

Anytime you are looking to furnish or decorate your patio there are always a few things you should consider:

1.  Outdoor furniture can be more expensive and so should be either cast or wrought aluminum or iron, or made of resin wicker or teak. With high exposure to UV rays and salt area poor quality outdoor furniture can rust, fade or become brittle and break.

2. All cushions should be made out of sunbrella or an alternative outdoor fabric that will not fade in direct sunlight or become mildewed

All outdoor furniture sold at Dwellings meets all the above criteria; meaning that the outdoor furniture you invest in will last longer while maintaining a fully unique and stylish look.

Here are some great outdoor items found exclusively at Dwellings. From top left Rustic Wicker outdoor seating from $3299 Bds. Aqua Seating Special Order through Dwellings Design Studio. Croquet Aluminium Dining from $999Bds. Lagos Sectional special order through Dwellings Design Studio. Outdoor Planter, Outdoor Rug, Lantern, Garden Stool and Outdoor Cushions all in store now!

The Dwellings Design Studio doesn’t only cater grown-up projects but also to the small projects that are special and life changing. This week I thought I’d write something appealing to new parents and parents-to-be.

An important part of getting ready for baby’s arrival is preparing the baby nursery. Many parents are a bit hesitant in decorating their nursery in pinks or blues because there’s always the chance of a surprise. Here are some great ideas for creating the perfect gender neutral nursery.

This is a perfect example of a unisex nursery! I absolutely love the personal touch of a painted mural that adds all the visual interest to an otherwise neutral nursery. To create this look on a budget, parents can also use wall decals available in a multitude of styles.

Do you love the rustic neutral look? Your nursery can tie into the rest of your home decor. This beautiful nursery uses regular decor items in a soothing color palette to make it suitable for baby.

I love how fresh and fun this nursery is! A stark white crib pops off of a fun accent wall with lime green stripes. Orange and turquoise accents are a fresh twist on the usual yellow and green colors of a neutral nursery.

This jungle themed nursery is perfect for your little boy or girl. Natural woods with cool green tones are a safe and fun way to design your nursery!

I hope these pictures will give you just the inspiration needed to get started on your nursery! Remember neutral colors like yellow, green, turquoise, orange and brown are perfect for your little girl or boy. Mix it up with a fun and friendly theme such as animals or a day at the beach and you’ll have a look that is surprise proof!

Looking for furniture or decor for your little one’s space? Remember Liliplum has lots of furniture and crib bedding and decor! Or create a registry and get everything on your list!

Thanks again for reading and remember there’s a new post every Wednesday! We’d love to hear your comments or give suggestions for any of your design projects! Write a comment or send us an email and your design could be featured in our next blog. Have a great week!

This week I thought I would share with you one of our completed Dwellings  Design Studio Projects with tips on how to get the look. Even better i’ve posted before and after pics! Who doesn’t love to see a beautiful transformation? This was a lovely project to work on with absolutely wonderful clients who had purchased a second home in Barbados; a charming cottage close to the beach on the West Coast. The home was purchased fully furnished by a fun-loving couple who thought the furniture was a bit too out of date and bland for them and so came to us at Dwellings for some design help! Check out what we did for them below:

Master Bedroom-Before

The Masterbedroom had a feminine and dated feel.

The Living Room-Before

Before the indoor furniture consisted of mismatched and disproportioned furniture

The Outdoor Space-Before

The outdoor furniture was a very small scale that was uncomfortable for the clients and once again was quite outdated.
We met with the Clients who were leaving to go back home to England and really didnt know where to start design wise. They longed for something contemporary and fresh that would suit both thier styles. The Husband liked clean lines with little fluff and decor. His wife loved soothing colours and lots of accessories with a feminine touch. This is how we gave them their dream vacation home:

Master Bedroom-After

The Master Bedroom is now fresh and contemporary with both masculine and feminine elements. The bold striped rug, sepia prints with dark frames and streamlined furniture mesh with the upholstered bed and soft neutral colour palette for bedding and throw pillows.

Living Room-After

The Living Room is now warm and inviting with off white slipcovered seating, whitewashed furniture and pops of colours with fun throw cushions.

Dining Room-After

The indoor dining area is now cohesive with the living room giving the impression of one very large open space.
Outdoor Space-After

The Outdoor Space is now perfect for lounging and making the most of the outdoors with over sized seating and dining chairs. It is now the ultimate space to entertain and relax.

Have your own design dillema? Send us a message with your problem room and include a picture; let us know how you envisage your dream space and we can give you tips and tricks with suggested solutions. Better yet we can provide a full makeover hassle free to give you that dream space you’ve been craving.
