Archive for January, 2012

What better to kick off the year than by posting our latest design project and sharing some tips with you on how to get the look for yourself.

We were very thankful to have the opportunity to design a fresh look for a Port St Charles villa with a gorgeous view of the marina. The clients wanted a fresh and modern look with lots of colour to match their fun personalities. This was quite a change from the original, more traditional furnishings. Check out the finished look:

The warm wood tones contrast with the modern white furniture to give a 'homey' feel to this room. Blue accessories add the perfect pop of colour to keep the space relaxing and fresh.

This nautical inspired design is perfect for a patio overlooking the marina. The teak furniture's stainless steel accents gives the look a contemporary twist. The crisp white and navy accents make this outdoor room feel just like you are dining on your own personal yacht

We wanted to give this room some "va-va-voom" so we paired the stark white furniture with some fierce red accents which pop off the otherwise neutral tones.

This contemporary nautical style is perfect for a seaside retreat and can easily be incorporated into an existing home by borrowing a few elements from the above design.

1. Modern furniture is very sleek and streamline and can look very cold if not mixed with textures, colours and patterns. Introducing layers of colour through accessories will make the look complete.

2. Don’t be afraid to use more unusual pieces for interest. A unique piece mixed in with more expected pieces creates a designer feel.

3. Geometric and larger prints work well for this style. Smaller patterns such as delicate floral patterns will come across as a more traditional design.

Tips for creating your own modern look:

1. Look for pieces that have architectural interest. Modern pieces can be extremely sleek and streamlined or can have a funky shape. These are great to mix in with more traditional pieces to add interest and a designer feel.

2. Create a softer and more homey feel to the modern look by adding textures and bold prints to the space with cushions, rugs and accessories.

3. Don’t over accessorize. A modern look is about simplicity. Keep your space airy, open and bright.

4. Mirrored and acrylic pieces can make smaller spaces seem larger and are always a conversational piece.

5. Bold colours are a great way to play off minimalistic furniture. Abstract and over sized art work  fit perfectly in  this look.
